Social media communications
Saltford Parish Council (SPC) uses social media as an additional way of sharing information with residents and promoting awareness of Council activities, services and local initiatives. While many residents find this a useful source of information, social media is not a statutory function of the Parish Council and is provided alongside the Council’s other communication channels as resources allow.
SPC’s social media accounts are managed by the part-time Parish Clerk in accordance with Council policy, alongside a wide range of statutory, administrative, financial and operational responsibilities. Unlike larger councils and organisations with dedicated communications teams, SPC does not have the resources available to continuously monitor, respond to and moderate social media activity throughout the day, in the evenings, at weekends or during periods of staff leave.
For this reason, comments are disabled on SPC’s social media posts. The Council’s social media channels are intended primarily to share information and updates with residents, rather than to operate as public discussion forums, and disabling comments enables SPC to maintain an active social media presence in a way that is practical, consistent and proportionate to the resources available.
We are pleased that SPC’s social media content reaches a wide audience and receives significant engagement. Within a typical 28-day period, SPC’s pages receive on average 80,000 to 120,000 views. Whilst this demonstrates the effectiveness of SPC’s communications, it also means that the Council does not have the capacity to monitor and moderate social media discussions at a level that would be required for comments to remain open. We are grateful to everyone who follows, shares and engages with our content, helping important local information reach as many people as possible.
Residents remain welcome to engage with and share SPC’s social media content. All posts are set to allow sharing, enabling information to be circulated more widely through residents’ own networks and community groups. This helps important local information reach a broader audience while allowing the Council to focus its resources on its primary responsibilities.
SPC does not use social media as a channel for official correspondence. Any posts that tag the Council, mention the Council or are made on external pages may not be seen by SPC and should not be relied upon as a method of contacting the Council.
Likewise, comments made on social media are not treated as formal representations, complaints, requests for service or official communications to the Council. The Council does not have the resources available to routinely monitor, record and circulate social media comments to Councillors for consideration.
Residents are welcome to contact SPC directly via its official channels as shared on this page, including by phone, email or webform. Correspondence received through these channels can be properly recorded and, where appropriate, shared with all Councillors. As not all Councillors use social media or regularly view social media content, contacting the Council through its official channels remains the most effective way of ensuring that comments, concerns, suggestions and feedback are brought to the attention of the Council.
Further to using the Contact Us information on this page, residents are encouraged to explore SPC’s website, which contains information on many frequently asked questions. Useful pages include Report It (which explains how to report issues to the appropriate authority), Meetings – Agendas & Minutes, and other information available through the website’s search function.
Thank you to everyone who follows SPC online. We appreciate your continued interest, support and engagement with the work of Saltford Parish Council.
