Social media communications

Saltford Parish Council’s social media pages are a tool for SPC to share information to residents and visitors to the village. Unlike larger councils, SPC has limited staff resource and is unable monitor social media posts 24/7 or check them daily, which is why commenting is not usually possible.

Saltford Parish Council’s social media is managed by the part-time Parish Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer – alongside their many other essential duties and actions as required to keep Council business running smoothly. Unlike larger councils or organisations that have full-time communications teams, SPC’s Clerk does not have the resources to monitor and moderate comments on social media throughout their working day (or outside of it!). For context, within any 28-day period, SPC’s pages often receive over 50,000 views from around 10,000 people. Meeting such demand to respond to social media responses or in terms of moderation would lead to increased costs to residents through a rise in the parish precept. We appreciate resident’s understanding as we aim to balance our communications with what is realistically manageable for a small Parish Council with one part-time staff member.

To manage our current resources effectively, SPC needs to keep our pages without comments enabled so we can continue sharing important information as currently, but ensure that time on our social media communications are within our capacity. SPC believes most residents would agree that it’s important for the Parish Clerk to prioritise the essential work of the Parish Council and maintain focus on Council responsibilities, rather than monitoring and responding to comments on social media throughout the working day. Residents are welcome to contact SPC directly by phone, email and webform. As such, SPC uses social media as an ‘electronic noticeboard’ to share information with residents. (Parish Councils are not required to use social media, and there are no specific rules about what they must post or how they use social media if they do). Thanks to everyone who follows SPC online, we appreciate your continued interest and support.

Any posts that SPC is tagged in on external pages will not be responded to (and SPC is not always notified of tags or posts on social media). Members of the public are able to contact SPC directly using details on this page, or as shared on the ‘Councillors’ page. To share a view with SPC and to hear the views of others, please attend a meeting if it is about a matter to be resolved on an agenda (see our ‘Public Engagement Guidance’ document on the ‘Meetings – Agendas and Minutes page’), or get in contact using the details on this page.

SPC is keen to hear views from residents and visitors, however the Council does not take comments made on social media into account as official comments or communications to the Parish Council. This includes comments on planning applications as consulted on by B&NES Council (the Planning Authority). The way to inform the Council of a view is to attend and address the Council at a meeting where an item is to be resolved. Residents are welcome to attend SPC’s meeting to share views with the Parish Council (if a matter to resolve on an agenda) or can to contact SPC using the details on this page.

Further to using the ‘Contact Us’ information on this page, residents are encouraged to explore SPC’s website to find the answers to some frequent questions e.g. ‘Report It‘ (how to report issues to the correct authority), ‘Meetings – Agendas & Minutes‘ etc., or by using the search function on the top right corner of the website.
