Free tree giveaways to increase Bath and North East Somerset’s green canopy - Saltford Parish Council

Press release from B&NES Council:

A chance for residents to improve their gardens and local environment is on offer in two tree giveaway trial events to be held by Bath & North East Somerset Council.

As part of B&NES Council’s commitment to tackling the effects of the climate and ecological emergencies, up to three free trees per household are being made available at the events in Radstock on April 24 and May 1.

The scheme is aimed at extending valuable tree cover in hard to reach areas across B&NES by providing species of limited size, that are characteristic of the suburban environment with the majority shown to be beneficial to air quality.

Residents will be able to choose from a range of species including birch, alders, snake bark maple and mountain ash.

Half-hour time slots can be booked for tree collections between 9am to 5pm on either date via the tree giveaway web page. Residents need to show a copy of their tree order confirmation at the collection point, either on their phone screen or on paper.

The potted trees are between 2 and 2.5 metres tall and will be able to fit in a medium sized family car with the seats down. Residents are asked to arrive without passengers to allow maximum space for the trees and to reduce the number of people coming into contact with each other. Staff will help with loading.

B&NES Council will provide planting and aftercare advice leaflets to each householder upon collection of their trees.

Councillor David Wood, B&NES Council cabinet member for Climate Emergency and Neighbourhood Services, said: “We hope many residents will take advantage of these giveaways to help integrate and increase tree cover across the district. Trees are so important in improving air quality and helping to combat the climate emergency, which is why we’ve committed to planting 100,000 trees in B&NES by May 2023. Every tree really does count as part of our collective efforts to improve our environment.”

The events will take place at Radstock Rd works depot, Radstock, BA3 2AA on Saturday 24 April and Saturday May 1. Please note collection is not from the recycling centre. The location for collection is adjacent to the old Five Arches Bridge and will be signposted.
