New pedestrian crossing point in Saltford on A4 Bath Rd (nr hill) - works commence 28 April 2025 - Saltford Parish Council

Update: 12 June 2025

Good news – the new A4 pedestrian island crossing is nearly here! B&NES Council shared with SPC today that their contractor is aiming to install the crossing next week (w/c 23 June) – subject to final permissions for working on the highway.

The work should only take one day, but there will be temporary two-way traffic lights, so please allow extra time for any journeys. Once a date is confirmed, full details will be available on: https://one.network/

Originally requested by Saltford Parish Council back in 2019, and supported by B&NES Ward Cllr Duncan Hounsell for many years since, it’s fantastic to see this important road safety improvement for our community finally becoming a reality.

Update: 10 June 2025

Further to the 1 May update, unfortunately there has been a longer lead-in time to get the new island in place. B&NES Council has apologised for this, and said they are in touch with their contractor.

B&NES will be contact with Saltford Parish Council in due course with an update on its installation. Hopefully not much longer to wait!

Update: 1 May 2025

B&NES Council has completed works on two ‘tactile dropped kerbs’ on Bath Rd (nr the Rowing Club).

Next step is the new road surface (overnight works from 6 May, see link to SPC’s article here), road markings will be put in place to accommodate the new pedestrian island at the time.

After A4 resurfacing works, B&NES teams will return and to install the pedestrian island, in approx. four weeks.

Thanks to B&NES Council for this update. Please find a photo below which shows the two new dropped curbs, taken 1 May 2025.

Works for the installation of a central pedestrian island refuge in Saltford on A4 Bath Road (Bath side of the village, near the hill) to facilitate safer crossing will take place next week.

B&NES Council has written the following letter to nearby residents on Bath Road about the works (please note: ‘A37’ on hard copies corrected to ‘A4’):

NEW PESEDTRIAN CROSSING POINT WITH CENTRAL ISLAND (A4 BATH ROAD, LOCATED OUTSIDE 507 PROSPECT VILLAS).

The resurfacing works on the A4, Bath Road has given us the opportunity to introduce a new pedestrian crossing point with a central island. With the resurfacing works due to begin from the 6th May 2025 we have had to accelerate the construction which will commence the week beginning 28th April 2025.

The works will take place under manually controlled two-way lights which will also be removed from the highway at the end of each day, these works will also be outside of peak times (9:30am – 2:30pm) to avoid as much inconvenience as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the construction, please contact the Traffic Management Team – traffic_management@bathnes.gov.uk
