Families are invited to step into the past, get creative, and explore the world of art and archaeology this May half-term at two of Bath’s cultural attractions – The Roman Baths and Victoria Art Gallery.
The Discovery Card gives Saltford residents (and all residents of Bath and North East Somerset) free access to Council owned Heritage Sites, including the Roman Baths, Parade Gardens and Victoria Art Gallery (book your free site visits at https://beta.bathnes.gov.uk/book-free-heritage-visits), as well discounts with participating local attractions and businesses; a full list of partners can be found here. So it’s well worth having!
Please note that although entry is free to Discovery Card holders, some May 2025 half-term activities require booking and are also at an additional cost. Please see below for details.
Residents can order their cards online, and have the choice of ordering an e-card or physical card (made from recycled plastic). At the Roman Baths
This half-term, journey back to Roman Britain with interactive trails, crafty workshops, and the chance to meet characters from the past.
Highlights include:
- Archaeology Adventures
27 – 30 May
Budding archaeologists can dig for replica Roman artefacts in a specially designed excavation trench. This hands-on activity takes place in the Investigation Zone, giving young explorers the chance to uncover the secrets of Roman life.
Tickets £6 per child (plus standard entry to The Roman Baths); pre-booking highly recommended. - Meet the Romans
Encounter costumed characters and learn what life was like for the people of Aquae Sulis. - Follow Luna’s Trail
Embark on a new interactive trail guided by Luna, the Roman goddess of the moon. Illustrated by local artist Ben Pulletz, this celestial-themed adventure links Roman culture with the mysteries of the night sky. - Make a Roman Brooch
28 – 29 May, 10am–12noon & 2pm–4pm
Get crafty and create a glittering Roman brooch inspired by an artefact found in the spring.

Let imaginations soar with stories of Roman life narrated by former Children’s Laureate, Michael Rosen. Free with admission. - Activity Book
Pick up a fun-packed activity book full of stickers, facts, and games. Available to pre-order with tickets or purchase in the gift shop for £5.
At Victoria Art Gallery
Discover the newly reopened Upper Gallery, enjoy hands on craft in The Modelling Room, and be inspired by the art of printmaking in the First Impressions exhibition.
Highlights include:
- In The Frame! Family Activity
27 – 30 May, 10.30am–12.30pm & 1.30pm–3.30pm
In the new Modelling Room, children can use ink and stamps to create a unique print, then decorate a funky frame to take home.

Head to the new Art Explorer family area in the Upper Gallery to dress up, play with arty toys, and get inspired by the paintings around you.

Discover the world of printmaking in First Impressions: Printers’ Proofs of Works by Great 20th Century Artists, or explore the permanent collection upstairs.
Entry to the Upper Gallery and trails is free; tickets required for First Impressions.
The Roman Baths is open daily from 9am – 6pm, Victoria Art Gallery is open from 10.30am – 5pm Tuesday – Sunday, plus Bank Holiday Monday.
