Wessex Water has contacted Saltford Parish Council and some residents to provide an update on its proposal to build a bridge over the River Avon to improve access to Saltford Water Recycling Centre (WRC) on Mead Lane, and provide a connection to the A431 road, which runs through Swineford and Bitton.
The planning application to Bath & North East Somerset Council for the bridge was approved subject to conditions in December 2021, following an application process that also heard comments about the proposal from the public. Wessex Water have shared that they are currently working through those conditions.
Saltford Parish Council responded to the B&NES Council planning consultation in June 2021, to view SPC’s full response please see our ‘SPC approves Wessex Water planning application’ news article.
Wessex Water has shared that next phase of the project will see environmental preparation begin on site for the route of the road, ahead of the main construction phase. This is expected to start during February 2022 and will involve work on trees and some hedgerow removal at the point where the new road will join the A431.
Wessex Water state that they are committed to the biodiversity gains and environmental improvements outlined as part of this scheme and, to mitigate this work, tree planting will take place adjacent to both ends of the bridge once the scheme has been completed. Wessex Water are also proposing wetland habitat creation and are continuing to work with local wildlife groups and others to identify habitat measures, including supporting bat and bird species.
Wessex Water have stated that there will be a small increase in traffic on both sides of the river. Some of the hedgerow removal will be completed under traffic lights on the A431 between 9.30am & 3pm, avoiding times of peak road use.
Wessex Water say that they apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. If members of the public have any further questions please call the Wessex Water customer services team on 0345 600 4 600 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, emergencies at other times) or email: firstname.lastname@example.org
