Wales & West 2024 roadworks on A4 Bath Road - Spring 2024 update - Saltford Parish Council

(Please also see SPC’s article ‘Gas mains works at A4 Bath Road‘ for context, as published in January 2024 and updated March 2024).

Wales and West Utilities (WWU) have started roadworks on a second section of the A4 near Saltford, this time between the junction with Corston Lane and The Globe Roundabout (near the rugby pitches).

The following information has been shared with Saltford Parish Council (below) and any relevant updates if received from WWU will be posted on SPC’s social media (Facebook / X – please follow!):

Wales & West Utilities works started on the A4 Bristol Road by Newton Bridge on Friday 29 March, and are likely to last for 8 weeks. These works are required to replace a 700m section of 6” metallic medium pressure main from the Stotthert & Pitt RFC down to the roundabout near to the globe pub.

WWU say that these works have been driven by a need to replace an ageing main that has had a lot of leakage history. Due to how WWU’s network is arranged in the area, they will need to lay the new PE main first, commission it and tie it into WWU’s network before WWU can abandon the metallic main.  WWU will be using the technique of directional drilling to lay the new PE pipe.

These works are likely to take up to 8 weeks to complete. WWU asked B&NES Council (the Highways Authority) to start within the Easter Holidays to make sure WWU can have these completed within 8 weeks, before WWU return in the summer holidays.

Two-way traffic lights will be installed as of 29 March, these lights will be manned by WWU’s contractor. Installing the lights will allow WWU to dig trial holes to establish a drill path and prepare for drilling the following week for the new PE main. If WWU can find a suitable route close the kerb edge, they should be able to remove the two-way lights, install a safety zone for works and maintain two-way traffic. WWU are aware that if this can be achieved it will reduce the impact on road users and the residents of Saltford.

WWU planned to have Variable Message Signs (electric) signs out earlier to notify A4 users of the upcoming works (and to contact SPC etc.,) but this was not the case and they have apologised for this.

Saltford Parish Council may receive updates from WWU on how the works progress, and if so will share with residents either by updating this article and/or posting on its social media. SPC’s most recent Facebook posts can be found on the right-hand sidebar of its homepage.

Please note that SPC looks to share major roadworks information as received for resident awareness. Any enquiries about the works need to be made by residents directly to WWU. B&NES Council is the Highways Authority for the Saltford area.
